Camden Canals Narrowboat Association
Our aim is to offer disadvantaged community groups an experience of a canal trip on a traditional narrowboat. We run and maintain 'Tarporley' - a historic Northwich narrowboat, converted to carry 12 passengers. We mainly do day or evening trips but also longer ones as passengers & crew can sleep aboard. Volunteers help run the boat, crewing, supporting passengers, working locks, mooring,…
Idea for research
Idea for research
How can turning canals into a third space foster a community for all members of society suffering distress and hardship (e.g. mental illness, long-term illness, poverty and homelessness, etc)?
This project will consist of research, analysis and recommendations, which should be prioritised based on potential for delivery and outcomes.

The data collection will take the form of conversations with relevant stakeholders e.g. trusts, charities, communities.
Communities to consider include community centres, council and estate housing residents, (children’s) hospitals, mental hospitals, rehab centres, schools, university for the third age, and relevant trusts (e.g. canals trust, water board IWA, etc.).

There is some existing data on how to get schools involved, and what’s stopping them from using canal boats.
Impact of idea
Help in alleviating several pain points: fostering a community of people in need of relief, countering lack of volunteers (new generation of young people to look after the charity), meeting charity commission rules (need to meet demands for charitable use of boats to balance out for-profit activities), recommendations contribute to association’s 5-year plan.

If you have any existing data or information you would like included in a project, please tell us what kind of data these are
