Candidates

Georgia OKeeffe

I am running for the position of online Co Editor-in-Chief because I believe my dedication to promoting diverse voices and perspectives alongside my enthusiasm for accurate global news will contribute to Pi Media’s growth. I envision the club as a platform for students to express themselves, engage with pressing issues, and showcase their talents. In order to continue and elevate the club's profile on campus I would implement reforms.

Firstly, I would introduce a segment dedicated to World days, aiming to offer valuable insights into their historical significance and contemporary ramifications. From international Mother Language Day to World Day Against Child Labour, this segment would raise awareness of important events and issues which impact our society today.

Secondly, I will implement surveys, polls and feedback forms to actively engage the wider student body and solicit their input on content preferences and topics of interest.

Thirdly, I will aim to build upon previous efforts to have committed weekly writers with the aim of increasing this number via support, inclusivity and listening to ideas.

Fourthly, I would introduce an annual friendly media awards ceremony which would also be a fundraising event. This event would both celebrate our writers’ and their contributions as well as reap financial reward for the club.

I am a UCL History student currently on my Year Abroad studying at the National University of Singapore. Here I am involved in the Science Journalism Club. I am also an active member of Pi

Tomás Quintino Gouveia

Following on from a year of collaboration with writers and enriching exchanges with fellow editors as co-section editor for opinion; I am running for Online Co-Editor in Chief to carry forward the unique and exciting nature of Pi.

Over the past year, I have developed a strong understanding and affection for the project. Having been able to work alongside incredible editors; learning of interesting ideas and takes from writers on pertinent questions, and having provided thought-provoking commissions I am motivated to participate in this promising next chapter.

In the aim of continuing the remarkable work done by the current team, providing continual improvement to Pi Online and improving the experience for editors, maintaining dynamic weekly newsrooms is essential. To improve writer-editor dialogue and incite new hesitant writers to share their ideas, I would work on launching a voluntary pilot program of office-hour style ‘writer with editor’ meetings. In the spirit of resolving the issues current editors face, I plan on developing a project for solo photographers to provide images for our articles, ensuring they get spotlight recognition, adding to the range of visual art editors can use and fostering intra-UCL partnerships.

Because of Pi Media, I have shared cherished moments, that I had not expected at the beginning. I hope to be able to keep contributing to this very special project.

Thank you for your consideration.

Isobel Knight

My name’s Isobel and I’ve been working with Pi for the last two years, first as Co-Culture Editor, and then as a Staff Writer whilst on my year abroad. My articles have been published in magazines, newspapers, and journals, but much of my work has been for Pi; it’s offered me such a great place to explore my writing style and ideas, particularly when branching into news/features pieces. As Online Editor-in-Chief, I would continue with weekly newsrooms, as well as frequent meetings with writers. I would prioritise free press tickets, as this was one of my favourite parts of being Culture Editor, and I’d love to make this more accessible to the whole society. And not just for exhibitions, but also concerts, club nights, premieres, Frieze art fair and sports events; so much free stuff in London is available to UCL writers just by sending quick emails to the press office! I would also place a focus on investigative and news pieces within UCL/Bloomsbury, as this is our chance to break new stories. Pi is something that I feel really passionate about, and I’d love to have a more active role during my final year at UCL. Thanks!!

Juliette Rapp

My name is Juliette, and I have been managing editor for News this year whilst studying Politics and IR in my second year.

I deeply value that Pi is accessible to all students, no matter one’s degree or prior experience. It has been a place for me to approach news in a creative way, to flourish alongside writers with different interests, and be inspired by editors with diverse viewpoints. I am running for co-EiC as I want to contribute to others experiencing this, by working to give everyone a platform in which their ideas are published, through advice and students cooperating.

I want to dedicate time to ensure a high-quality, smooth publishing process by coordinating everyone’s individual work and always being open minded.

I took part in inaugurating our first staff writers, who greatly contributed to elevating our publishing rate to 176 article last term, compared to 103 last year. I would pursue this if I am elected, by allocating at least 3 weekly news headlines to them, given our responsibility to regularly inform on a swiftly changing political landscape. I would also like to expand on investigative journalism, specifically with regards to UCL news.

Personal experience has shown me how vital editorials are to student journalism, and I would encourage their production. Finally, I will ensure that Pi Online continues to be a meeting place for student journalists offline, in which editors convey each week, and writers can meet with editors bi-weekly for advice and a chat.

Mariya Kachwala

Hello, I’m Mariya and I’m running for the position of Pi Online Co-Editor in Chief.

I’ve always been passionate about news and as an international student who wasn’t familiar with student publications, I was in awe of Pi and its work’s quality, consistency and the larger impact in the UCL community as well. As, the co-editor I'd:

  • Encourage more investigative journalism within UCL. The conversations that the Conservative Society reporting started led to a fundamental point in UCL history and showed the agency of journalism, I’d strive to have more such impactful stories.
  • Encouraging more stories about the Global South written by People of Colour at UCL. While Pi does a brilliant job at covering international news that often don’t make headlines in mainstream media, being the co-editor-in Chief, I’d love to utilise UCL’s diverse student pool to bring in more nuanced journalism by students with similar backgrounds and first-hand experiences.
  • Lastly, I’d love to increase Pi’s cultural, specifically its Theatre coverage. This might be a personal passion but I’d love to attempt to have more coverage of sports and reviews of new shows, musicals and art exhibitions in and around London!

Lastly, my overall aim is to just have fun with the position, do new, unique and creative things while also continuing traditions of this brilliant organisation! Please give me an opportunity and istg you won’t be disappointed.

Thank you for reading, please vote for me if you agree!!

Love,

Mariya

Anna Cleary

I have loved being involved with Pi as a News Editor and a writer and I would love to continue to be more involved with student journalism for the rest of my time here! I would use the opportunity as Online co-Editor-In-Chief to increase the presence and significance of student journalism and help foster a greater sense of community, allowing for more student engagement with meaningful issues both inside and outside of UCL. I have ideas for collaborative events with other University of London newspapers and more involvement with UCL alumni and other professionals in the field. I would also love to help organise more events and workshops that harness journalistic skills like writing, editing, investigative journalism and reviews. Another idea I have for Pi Media is a regular column that focuses on different groups of UCL students which would help further root Pi at the heart of UCL.

I would love to be part of Pi’s lasting impact at UCL and, with my experience this year, I am confident in my ability to lead the editorial team!

Meriel Wehner

My name is Meriel and I am a second-year history student.

I am interested in this role because I have a deep passion for journalism. After serving as editor of my high school newspaper for two years, I joined Pi during my very first week at UCL. Currently, I edit Pi’s Features section, but I have also written articles for both Pi Online and Pi Magazine.

I would love to pursue a career in journalism – anyone who’s spoken to me for more than five minutes knows how much I like talking about politics – but more generally, I think that especially with the advent of AI, as the human voice is devalued more and more each day, the need for authentic, bold, and thought-provoking student journalism has never been so pressing.

I am really proud of what we have achieved this year, and would hope to continue our strong output. But, since the Tory article had such an impact, I would love to explore more UCL-based investigations next year. Beyond the fact that we have the best chance to make a tangible impact on campus, our position as students allows us to tell stories that no one else can, and is thus our best path to boosting student engagement, both as readers and writers.

Pi has been one of the highlights of my UCL experience, and I would love to spend my final year of university in this role.

Layla Quaedvlieg

Hi everyone! I am a second year BA English undergraduate and became a member of Pi Media last September. Since joining, I have been working as a News Correspondent and have loved writing regular articles for Pi Online. I feel I now have a good understanding of the society and the content it aims to produce, so would like to take my involvement to the next level as Online Co-EIC.

Part of what I love about Pi is how closely writers and editors work together as a team, so would like to help new writers have such a great experience too. Pi Online is a great space for our students to share the issues that really matter to them. If I was elected, I would like to focus on producing more investigative news pieces specifically related to UCL and related areas. This way, we can hopefully build a reputation as the first port of call for all students when anything important happens on campus, or even create breaking news stories.

Previously, I have worked remotely as an editor on a digital magazine targeted at young adults, where I was responsible for managing a small team who pitched to me every fortnight. Therefore, I feel I have good experience in both editing articles, understanding audiences, and organising writers, all of which would help me in the Online EIC role. I think I am creative, approachable, and always up for a challenge. I hope I will be able to bring these skills to Pi Online!
