Founded in 1946, Pi Media is the oldest and largest student journalism society at UCL. Initially launched as a newspaper and named after former Provost David Pye, we’ve been creating current, insightful and award-winning content on campus for over 70 years.
Pi Media was recognised as Best Publication at the Students’ Union Arts Awards 2022.
We publish content across three platforms: Pi Online, Pi Magazine and PiTV.
Pi Online is our fastest-growing platform, where we regularly post articles across six sections: News, Opinion, Features, Science & Tech, Lifestyle and Culture. From breaking campus news to insightful commentary on student politics, in-depth investigations to environmental features, or student life advice to reviews of the latest culture that London has to offer, we cover absolutely everything on this platform. Pi Online was named Best Publication at the 2015 and 2017 UCLU Arts Awards and the Student Publication Association's Best Website 2015/16.
Pi Magazine is our free biannual print and online publication. Each magazine issue centres on a different theme, carefully chosen to drive discussion around current events and new ideas on campus. We pride ourselves on the professional journalistic and artistic quality of Pi Magazine. Look out for our launch events this year and pick up a copy of the glossy print magazine on campus! Alternatively, all of our magazines are available in online format, on our website. In 2020, we launched Pi Magazine: Freshers' Edition, an online mini-magazine full of fun and exciting content relating to the freshers' period. We will launch a similar edition in the first few weeks of the 2021-22 academic year. Pi Magazine came runner-up in the Best Student Publication category at the 2009 Guardian Student Media Awards, and won Best Publication at the 2012, 2013 and 2016 UCLU Arts Awards. Most recently, Pi Magazine was awarded Best Newspaper Design at the 2021 Student Publication Association National Awards.
PiTV is the broadcasting branch of Pi Media. We produce a range of video projects, including short documentaries, travel diaries, student news coverage, political interviews, UCL Students’ Union investigations, and collaborations with other arts societies to provide backstage access to various projects and performances. PiTV won Best Collaboration with Film Society in 2013.
Pi Media offers a dynamic and supportive environment to develop your journalistic style, and the pandemic certainly has not stopped us. Maybe you want to report on campus news? Or voice your opinion on politics, music or the environment? Maybe you’re a budding designer and illustrator? Or you have a personal story to share? Whatever your idea might be, Pi Media can help project your voice to students on campus.
