Diplomacy Society: Head of Events

The Diplomacy Society has been excellent for the intellectual side of diplomacy - getting veterans of the world of international affairs to come and share their wisdom and insights to us members. However, it is lacking in an equally important aspect - the social side of diplomacy.

As Head of Events, I promise to do exactly that: introduce new opportunities for us to make the connections and friendships we look for with other diplomats, through various kinds of diplomacy-related socials. I guarantee that these socials will be more common, more engaging, and larger than before - while still maintaining the keynote speaker-centered events we all love.

I am running for the head of events position because I am passionate about creating engaging experiences for members in Diplomacy Society. 

Through my previous leadership roles, I believe I have the experience needed for to be the head of events. Last academic year, I had the privilege of serving as the Chair of the Knit-a-Square focus group, where we handcrafted and shipped thousands of knitted goods to orphans in South Africa. With my leadership skills, I aim to organize engaging events that inspire people to engage in the field of diplomacy. 

In addition, I served as the logistics officer for a local service organization committed to teaching underprivileged kids English. This role allowed me to develop my organizational and liaison skills by frequently communicating with members of our school faculty and external service partners. I will be committed to using my communication and leadership skills to cultivate meaningful connections on behalf of our society. In my capacity as the Head of Communications for the high school yearbook, I developed and maintained connections that were crucial to the success of our publication. As Head of Events, I will leverage my experience to create a broader network that enriches the experiences we offer and showcases diverse perspectives.

Hi everyone! My name is Lilly and I am excited to run for Head of Events. 

Witnessing the disconnect between international responses and tones on the ongoing Israel-Palestinian war makes me interested in how diplomacy can be enacted through a stream of channels to bring a ceasefire and a permanent resolution. Being well-informed about global political and economic challenges therefore empowers my ability to be nimble in organising events that the UCL community cares about. Working with the Careers Officer, I also want to introduce events such as interview skills workshops that demystify career journeys into diplomacy and related areas. I aim to create platforms that not only educate our members about diplomatic principles but also provide opportunities for networking and hands-on experience. This calls for greater collaboration between Society heads and with other networks to tackle every facet of diplomacy but also create chill social sessions. 

My role embodies collaborative leadership and creative thinking to spark outreach. For example, I want to create initiatives that are centric to our ambitious society members such as an international affairs blog that encourages students to write and think critically.  As a previous Senior Editor of my sixth form’s Economic Journal, I would be interested to lead on this, leveraging my developed skills of editing, organisation and communication as well as the network of the committee.

I am studying Geography BA and am keen to explore the geopolitical sphere in more depth. By utilising the skills learnt in my role as Events Director of Geography Society, I would organise a range of events and collaborations with other societies to help members build their networks and develop their understandings and interests in foreign affairs.

Hi everyone, my name is Alex and I’m thrilled to be running for Head of Events. I'm a second-year History, Politics, and Economics student, majoring in Politics and Economics.

As a society member since last year, I've enjoyed UCL Dip Soc's amazing events. I'm eager to join the committee, collaborating to organise more fun and engaging events.

As the External Relations officer for UCL Snowsports Society, I excel in building relationships and organising diverse events. My internship with the Afghanistan and Central Asian Association, including organising major cultural events like our International Women’s Day event at the Royal Albert Hall, has also honed my communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills - vital for coordinating events effectively.

These are my proposals for making our events more impactful:

• Incorporate more events with a focus on Security. 
• More events with British diplomats, giving members a chance to connect with members of the Foreign Office and receive better insights in furthering their diplomatic careers.
• More trips to political institutions such as the EU or UN so that members can get first-hand experience in the functioning of these important institutions. 

I'm passionate about diplomacy and shaping our world. As Head of Events, I'll create engaging experiences, fostering understanding, collaboration, and dialogue among our members. I'll also leverage my contacts to benefit Dip Soc, ensuring meaningful events.
