Helen Wu

I am Helen Wu, a second-year BSc Biomedical Science student. I have been a follower of the Science Magazine Society since my undergraduate foundation year at UCL, and I really enjoy reading interesting and wonderful articles from our writers. I am confident to be a good editor and academic officer not only from my grades in courses and through years of practice but also as a creative thinker, always trying to potentiate new findings in science. Being the head of the journal club of the Genetics Society last year, I applied my communication and time-management skills through reaching +30 experts within and outside UCL and holding journal clubs about twice a month. More importantly, I have a great passion for accessible science communication, hoping to allow more people - even outside academia - to be attracted by the wonderful ingenuity and novelty of scientific research. As I'm also a research enthusiast, I would like to share my enjoyment with others through science communication as well! Being a copy/managing editor allows me to immerse in the process of this appreciation.

To fulfil my role as an academic officer, I shall:

  • Communicate actively with our writers, make Excel/Google Sheets for the planning, and meet the deadlines of editing/event organisation.
  • Cooperate with other committee members, sharing my ideas and expertise in science communication and contributing to the good quality of articles.
  • Participate in every writing workshop, bringing up ideas for writing topics and discussing writing skills.
  • Make use of my
Savani Sawaikar

Hey, I’m Savani! As a person who has a keen interest in fostering a culture of research and learning in the society, I want to bring my enthusiasm to the role and would like to propose the following:

1)Research Groups: Establish research groups where students can collaborate with UCL PhD candidates. This will provide our members with valuable guidance and mentorship while learning from ongoing research projects. By bridging the gap between undergraduate and postgraduate levels, this will facilitate knowledge exchange within our community.

2)Workshop-Based Events: Organising more workshop-based events focused on academic writing, journalism, and research methods. These workshops will equip our members with essential skills for communicating scientific ideas effectively and navigating the research process.

3)Research Evening: Host events where members can come and wrack their brain on questions of their choice related to a speaker’s area of research. Members can spend some time understanding ideas behind the research and delve into topics of their choice, which will make for a more engaging and fulfilling speaker event at the end of the night (and perhaps a social!)

With my ideas and commitment to executing programs which garner a sense of intellectual curiosity paired with my organisational skills, I feel like I would be a good candidate for the role of Academic Officer. I look forward to collaborate with my colleagues to create an inclusive space for all our members, thanks!
