Visuals have always been an important part of science communication - a powerful way to tell the stories of research and results in a way which connects with audiences and communicates key messages in an accessible way.
However, it can be all too easy to fall into traps when selecting or designing images, which undermines communications objectives and reinforces harmful misconceptions. In this talk, Tania Duarte, coordinator of the nonprofit Better Images of AI project, will share research, experiences and images from the ongoing mission to reimagine unhelpful pictures of Artificial intelligence.
She will explain how a global collaboration of researchers, AI institutes, activists and creatives worked together to identify and challenge dominant tropes in visual AI representation. She will ask what can be learned from this exploration of how to better imagine the processes and technologies currently receiving massive coverage.
Tania will encourage and invite questions such as:
What approaches can be used to encourage better mental models of research, applications and impact among the public, media and policymakers? What new metaphors, concepts or visual approaches are needed to avoid playing into myths rooted in science fiction? How can we create compelling visual images yet which don’t create barriers to engaging with the realities of technologies? What are the societal harms which occur when publics are not enabled to properly engage with innovation?
