Refugee Education UK
Refugee Education UK mission is to equip young refugees to build hopeful futures through education. We are working towards a world where all young people displaced by conflict or crisis are able to build more hopeful futures. We do this by supporting young refugees and asylum seekers to access, remain and progress in education.
Description

Do you have a passion for supporting others succeed through education and have an interest in the refugee sector?

At Refugee Education UK, we strive towards uplifting young refugees and asylum-seekers to access, progress and thrive in education and build positive futures.

Our volunteer educational mentoring role gives you a chance to provide educational support to young people from asylum-seeking and refugee backgrounds. By giving 1 hour a week, you can help someone advance their English and maths skills.

As an educational mentor, you join a community of other mentors based across London, Birmingham, Oxford and Cambridge. Through our trainings (see below) and quarterly socials, we invite you to join a wider network of support, to improve as a mentor and to learn about the refugee sector.

Duties

What will you be doing as a mentor?

  1. To attend full induction training, other training as necessary, and complete all relevant child protection checks.
  2. Prepare and arrange the sessions with your mentee, including sending reminders each week.
  3. Meet with your young person for a one hour session once a week, over the period of at least 6 months at a mutually convenient, public place, with the purpose of supporting young people to progress in their education.
  4. To safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people you come into contact with
  5. Complete weekly feedback for all mentoring sessions, whether delivered or missed.
  6. Liaise with the REUK Educational Mentoring team for support in delivering mentoring sessions where needed.
  7. Help to identify support needs of vulnerable students and ask your Mentoring Coordinator to contact REUK’s specialist team with these concerns for assistance from our specialist support worker.
  8. Attend a six-month mentoring review with an REUK Educational Mentoring Coordinator.
  9. Any other reasonable task requested by REUK.

Who will the volunteers be working with?
As mentors, you will be matched with one young person in your local area. Depending on your timing and location availability, weekly meetings take place in public places such as libraries and cafes that are convenient to both the mentor and the mentee. We also have the provision for online mentoring if both the mentor/mentee are happy with the arrangement.
Training
At the end of the application process, we invite all mentors to join us for a New Mentor Training. Training will aim to prepare you in your mentoring role and offer you an opportunity to ask questions. Topics will include the asylum system, some terminology, the lives of young unaccompanied asylum seekers and refugees, the education system, the mentoring scheme and boundaries.

We also hold quarterly mentor development trainings to help you up-skill and keep improving your support for your mentee and wider understanding of the refugee sector in the UK.

Time commitment

Mentoring sessions will take place for once a week for 1 hour a week, for a minimum commitment of six months. Sessions can take place anytime during the weekdays, up till 5:30pm. Please get in touch if you have any questions on the timings.
