As a fully-sponsored scholarship student who attended local state schools and subsequently a low performing private institution with the help of financial aid, I was intimidated at the start of the academic year upon realizing the disparity between my own and the wider Malaysian student body's socio-economic background. I found myself unable to relate to their prestigious boarding school endeavors, experiences of studying abroad all their life (often having lived in several big cities) and posh international schools. With this, I found myself somewhat behind as many others' "international" experience gave them a head start in navigating the complex and fast-paced social life of UCL and London itself. Their prestigious education background also granted them a head start in assimilating into the UK's method of teaching and the nature of University workload and learning.
As a Vice President and Welfare Officer, I thus hope to be able to provide support to not just the wider Malaysian community but also those who may not fall into the "majority" categories of the demographic, whether it be through race, gender, class, socio-economic background, the presence of physical and/or mental disabilities, and more.
I also intend to continue the ongoing tasks of vice president drawing from my past leadership experiences as a project manager for an NGO, my high school's student council, debate coach, Human Capital and Internal Affairs Director of AMEU and more.
