Angelica K Ngai

Hi! My name is Angelica and I’m a 2nd year History student. Sustainability is a huge passion of mine: ever since I’ve learned the impact of fast fashion, I’ve been a strong advocate of buying second-hand and reducing one’s overall consumption. As Head of Sustainability, here are some examples of what I'll organise:

  • Tiktok interviews on campus - essentially, we will interview people with the best fits on campus and ask them to break down their fit (where they got it from, the price etc). We will ask them what sustainable fashion means to them to showcase how UCL students incorporate sustainability into their everyday lives.
  • Thrift shop visits - these will entail styling challenges around a certain theme; we will have photographers with us during these trips so the best fits will get the chance to be photographed.
  • Talks on sustainability- I will invite speakers to give us better insight into how the fashion industry operates. This will include those who work for big brands as well as people who work for smaller sustainable businesses
  • Depop/vinted/ebay photography sessions- since many people lack the motivation to actually take photos of their old clothes and sell them online, these sessions are designed to “force” people to just get it over and done with. We can have models wear the clothing you want to sell so you will have a quality batch of photos for your second-hand seller profiles.

Please vote for me if these appeal to you!

I believe that looking cute and having good fashion doesn’t have to come at the expense of our planet. As we are all students on a budget, the temptation of buying fast fashion and following micro-trends is understandably hard to resist.

But, I want to empower Modo members that we can all better the world around us through making conscious decisions.

My experience in sustainability:

  • Current committee of UCL Climate Action Society and UCL Law Soc Green Committee.
  • Lots of experience volunteering with sustainability initiatives and organizations, including the UN.
  • I am a self-taught hobbyist sewist, who made lots of my own clothes that I actively wear.

If elected, some ideas I have are:

  • SOCIAL SHOPPING TRIPS: Regular thrifting or sustainable fashion shopping trips to kilo sales etc, as a society. We can explore cool neighbourhoods like Bricklane together and get to know each other too!
  • DIY: Working with the events officers to organise workshops on DIY fashion - upcycling, re-work or even crocheting / knitting.
  • CAREERS & OPPORTUNITIES: Collaborating with UCL sustainability societies, or events like London Sustainable Fashion Week, to raise awareness about the social and environmental dimensions of sustainable fashion. We could also explore career opportunities related to sustainable fashion.
  • BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE WARDROBE: Workshops / social media content eg, Alternatives to fast fashion brands, building a capsule wardrobe
Camilla Mina

Hello everyone! I'm Camilla, a second-year BSc. Social Sciences student.

Having been a member of the society since my first year and working as the executive editor in my second year, I have experience working with the team and members of the society. In my third year at UCL, I have decided to run for Head of sustainability.

After watching the movie "The true cost", which looks at the impact of the clothes we wear and their impact on the people who make them and the planet, I discovered a completely different side of fashion that is often ignored in the fashion industry and the media.

Although fashion is usually depicted as glamorous and charming, there are numerous downsides to a system that cannot survive without sacrifices to people and nature. The fashion industry needs to fundamentally change to reduce the environmental impact of fast fashion. For this reason, my aim is to start by working towards having a more sustainable Modo Fashion society at UCL, for example, by publishing sustainability-related articles in the MODO magazine. I would also like to organize workshops or inclusive discussion topics on the future of fashion, as I believe it would be interesting for other students and members of the society to bring new ideas to the table, also working in collaboration with other UCL societies that focus on the environment.

Vote for me for a more sustainable Fashion society :)
