Interning at Singapore's foreign ministry has revealed to me engagement with experts in the field and being on the ground allows one to fully understand the mechanisms of diplomatic work, which theory and academics cannot provide. Hence I am keen on advancing the work of Diplomacy Society in exposing students to this field.

As Head of Events, my proposed ideas are:

(1)  Working on our Cultural Diplomacy pillar - Having more physical events for networking opportunities and to shed more light on the real-world diplomatic career path. These include visits to or volunteering opportunities at embassies, think-tanks, NGOs or IOs.

(2) Venturing into the Private Sector of diplomacy - Events like talks, workshops or conferences to increase exposure on how diplomatic skills can be utilised in the private sector, in areas such as international trade.

Organising a successful event is the product of cumulative team effort. As Head of Events, I will actively listen to and work with my team to incorporate all contributed ideas, such that the events we organise can be most relevant and suited to the interests of members in the society. In addition, I have past experiences in project management and planning being in the executive committee of an interest group working on projects addressing societal issues.

I would be honoured to receive your vote to be nominated as a Head of Events. I am open to feedback and discussions, where you can find me at [email protected]. Thank you!

Aubin Aimes

Who am I and what have I done before arriving at UCL?

Hi, I’m in the 3rd Year of a dual degree between Sciences Po Paris and UCL! I arrived at UCL in September (specialisation International Relations).

I have had some international-based work experiences (internships):

- Office of the French Secretary of State for Development and International Partnerships (with head of cabinet and substantive advisers)

- Office of the French Minister for Transport (with diplomatic adviser)

- International working group of a presidential campaign staff (France)

- Collective “I support Ukraine” (reception of Ukrainian refugees)

I am also a journalist at the society’s “Diplomatic Review”!

What can I bring to the society?

It would be an honour to bring my motivation, network and projects to the heads of events team

■ With the network I developed through my experiences, I have projects of high-profile speaker events on:

Development in Africa

Adaptation to climate change

International response to the war in Ukraine

- Diplomat's experience of the presidency of the EU Council

- Events with MEPs on numerous topics.

⇒ In addition, I will send forms and polls so that you can choose topics.

■ I will propose to the team a new event format: DIPLOMATIC BREAKFASTS with diplomats in restaurants (2/month). Small groups better for networking

■ Continue to develop "Pizza and politics" discussion events on topics you chose before via forms.

Newsletter for internship opportunities.

Antoine W H Truffert

As a 3rd-year Anglo-French student at EISPS doing the Dual Degree with Sciences Po back in France, I am currently majoring in International Relations. I’m interested in applying classroom theory to the real world, meeting like-minded students who share this interest, and discussing current affairs.
Now, you could tell me that just being a member would suffice, but that is where my interest in being head of events shows up. Not only do I want to learn more about diplomacy, but I also want to share this with other members, and be more actively involved in the organisation of events.

I have experience through prior engagements at uni where I organised many events. This goes from organising parties to organising conferences. For instance, a major event I organised was in January when I invited a French eurodeputy, Raphaël Glucksmann, and an expert from Amnesty International, to organise a conference focused on the Uighur Crisis and how the EU could respond. I’d bring my motivation and interests: although being from France and the UK, I also have lived around, including in Russia, and have met people from various backgrounds: as a result, I’m very interested in most regions of the world, but also would be able to take into account everybody’s preferences and listen to whatever they’d like.
I’d be very happy to offer various types of events: embassy visits, conferences, interviews (in link with the Marketing Office), debates, social drinks, festivities, and much more!

Lucile Escoffier

Dear Diplomacy Members,

My name is Lucile and I would love to be part of this society as head of events to give you the best opportunities and events this year.

I have always loved to organise events such as parties, balls, visits and meetings and I think I can be a great asset to the diplomacy society. I am hardworking and motivated to find and organise things from the most obvious and easy ones to very unimaginable or unattainable ones. I love teamwork and I truly think I can be a good partner to work with.

I believe that the goal is to come up with events that will benefit anyone and that's why I want to engage with all members about what interest them and how this society can enable them to discover career paths, visit places and do trips that will give you insight, have talks with interesting and high profile people but also enjoy life throughout parties and socials that can also be very original.

If you believe that I can be a good candidate for this job and will be able to make this society even better by providing excellent events, then vote for me :)

Lucy Bishop

I am nominating myself for Head of Events of Diplomacy society because I want to bring you exciting, educational opportunities to fill the gap between learning about diplomacy on paper and actually experiencing it. I want the opportunity to open up the possibility of holding another conference and I also want to focus on making events as accessible to our members as possible.

I have previous experience organising youth politics and mental health conferences; this included planning and leading workshops, organising speakers and lots of organisation. Using these skills, I would like to be able to have the opportunity to organise events with a focused team within our society.

Freya Eke-Cunis

Hello everyone, I’m Freya, and I’m a second year Politics and International Relations student. I have a keen interest in diplomacy. I enjoy learning about security studies, conflict resolution, and representation in politics. I have found the embassy visits both this year and last year incredibly interesting and would love to give something back to the society.

I am a friendly and committed student who is used to undertaking responsibilities alongside my course, as Fitness Captain of the UCL Swimming Club. I am a collaborative team player with a broad communication skillset, having previously mentored students from across the world for Model United Nations. During Sixth Form, I was Deputy Head Girl and Political Editor of the school newspaper. This developed my public speaking capabilities, and made me a more confident, capable, and creative leader. I would hope to be an approachable and dedicated individual, willing to listen to new suggestions and requests regarding events.

I would hope to plan future events concerning:

  • Facilitation of discussions about war and conflict resolution
  • The oversights of international justice
  • The effect of the media and stereotypes on representation in politics
  • Alongside more embassy visits!

Thank you for your consideration.

Ingrid W Chan

The best thing about the Diplomacy Society is its wide breadth of events – I really appreciate the different embassy visits, lectures, and partnership opportunities available, as well as the opportunity to discuss politics and IR with people who are really passionate about the subject.

I wish to broaden the scope of the Diplomacy society – reaching out to different societies to do shared events. For example, I would like to focus on climate change and anything that impacts our international world and diplomatic relations between countries, giving members a new perspective on diplomacy. In addition, I would love to hold more events that are more accessible to the general society, as many current events have limited spaces – or develop a system to ensure everyone gets an ideal Diplomacy Society experience.

As a first year, I will bring fresh ideas, a bit of creativity and optimism to the team. I am very open to learning from more experienced team members and helping them out in any capacity – I can learn and adapt quickly to unfamiliar situations. My experience as leader of fundraising events and head editor of my high school journal not only helped me grow as a more organised, and effective leader, but taught me how to listen and cooperate with others.

By voting for me for the role of Head of Events, you will be getting someone who is 100% dedicated to the role of making the society run smoother, and helping everyone enjoy their Diplomacy Society experience.
