Idea for research
As further strides are made in the field of Artificial Intelligence, its governance has become more important than ever. This is especially true in the case of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which has the potential to exceed human capability across a wide range of fields and – more importantly – exceed human control. Currently there are unanswered questions about the powers necessary to effectively enforce international treaties around AGI, and this is a key area of interest for the One World Trust.

Exploring this area may involve identifying enforcement powers which are already available, evaluating their effectiveness, and how they could be adapted for AGI. Additionally, a project could focus on the biggest challenges AGI governance would face. The scope for this project is broad and can be approached from a range of disciplinary perspectives, drawing on existing policy data.
Impact of idea
The One World Trust’s aim to promote effective and accountable governance would be advanced in this critical area by a masters project investigating how to effectively enforce international treaties on AGI. This is a timely piece of research, as the future of AGI is a topic of discussion for the Summit of the Future happening this September – as well as the focus of a report arriving at the end of August.
