Ever wondered how you can update your wardrobe, yet avoid contributing to the tonnes of clothes that are thrown away in the UK every week? A clothing swap shop, like the one held by Reflect Your Future at UCL last week with the help of a group of UCL student volunteers, might be the answer!

The concept is simple: hand in some old clothes that you no longer want in advance, or bring a bag of items along on the day. Then, receive a token for each item you’ve given in, and exchange it for a second hand item of your choice. Head home and allow your new items to liven up your wardrobe!

The idea certainly proved popular with UCL’s environmentally-conscious and fashion-conscious students. When I arrived, the entrance hall of the new Student Centre was adorned with racks of skirts, shirts and all manner of clothing. Student volunteers were busy helping participants swap their old clothes for something a little newer, and chatting to intrigued passers-by. The event was bustling, with students running to try on bundles of clothes that they just couldn’t choose between. Most importantly, the event was about finding innovative ways to lead a more sustainable lifestyle, whilst having fun at the same time.

After the success of this week’s swap shop, Reflect Your Future are planning to hold another one later this academic year. If you’re living in student halls, keep an eye out for them and make sure you’ve got some unwanted clothes ready to trade in.
