UCL’s Romeo and Juliet follows the tale of Romano, son of Vladimir Lenin, and Yulia, daughter of White Army general Pyotr Wrangel. The year is 1917, and we find ourselves amidst the tumultuous beginnings of the Russian Revolution. The echoes of discontent reverberate from the squalid tenements of the working class to the gilded halls of the aristocracy in Petrograd.
While the fate of a nation hangs in balance, Romano and Yulia discover a love that defies the bitter divide between their families. Amidst the chaos of war and political upheaval, their romance becomes a symbol of hope for unity and reconciliation in a divided nation torn apart by revolution. Tragically, their love story reflects the broader conflict between the Bolsheviks and the anti-Bolshevik forces, ultimately ending in heartbreak and tragedy amidst the turmoil of the Russian Civil War.
The play will include: depictions of suicide, murder, death, violence with weapons, gunshot sound effects, the use of stage blood, references to sex, and mild physical intimacy, flashing lights and sudden noise effects.
