Job description

What is the teaching like

  • you will be teaching at either a five-star hotel or a private health club
  • the teaching environment is quiet & luxe
  • each lesson will be just you and your swimmer – so very private
  • the work is as varied as it can be. You might be helping a grandma learn to float for wellbeing, helping a triathlete with his catch for his ironman, or helping a dad learn to swim for hols with his kids
  • you will meet swimmers from all walks of life (creatives, business people, professionals) and get to know them very well
  • minimal setup or breakdown – just teaching
  • minimal no admin – just a great app with our office managing everything

Teaching times and start dates

  • we have a wide variety of times to flex around your studies e.g. early mornings, daytimes, evenings, Saturdays and Sundays
  • we are recruiting now with a view to start dates between May 2024 and June 2024.

The role would suit

  • the role is best suited to postgraduate and second-degree students (mainly in terms of availability)
  • but we will consider undergraduates with good visibility on their schedule and a strong background in competitive swimming and/or teaching or coaching experience

Qualifications

Our strong preference is for candidates with current Level 2 UK swim teaching qualifications (or equivalent overseas qualifications recognised in the UK).

However, we sometimes hear from excellent candidates where these are not in place. We never want to miss out on great talent so in these cases we will consider funding the training (6 days).

The relevant qualifications are:

  • STA/ASA Level 2 in swim teaching (or recognised international equivalent)
  • lifesaving certificate eg STA Safety Award for Teachers

Something unique about you? Let us know!

When selecting instructors we look at and balance many factors including swimming background, teaching experience (if any), availability, culture fit, people skills etc. We also keep any eye out for anything unique or different eg

  • swam competitively over the age of 16
  • open water, fin swimming, synchro, triathlon or surf lifesaving background
  • experience as a coach or an assistant coach in swimming or another sport
  • experience working with adults 1:1 in another sport eg skiing

Why you should apply

  • great teaching rate: £20 an hour where we fund qualifications.
If you hold UK Level 2 qualifications the rate will be between £20 and £25 per hour depending on previous teaching experience.
  • lots of hours: minimum of 6 hrs/wk with potential to build up to 15-20 hrs/wk over time
  • employment status: employed (i.e. not self-employed)
  • contract: “as required” i.e. paid for the hours you teach
  • paid holidays: entitled to statutory annual leave
  • external qualifications: where appropriate we will pay for required courses
  • internal training: training 1:1 with a founder
  • make a difference: see those smiles as your swimmers progress!
  • meet fantastic swimmers: meet Londoners you may not otherwise meet
  • stretch your soft skills: your communication skills develop considerably!
  • take a break: earn and learn while taking a few hours off being a student
  • be a big cog in a small company: we personally know all our instructors
  • be part of the fun: we have a team of super instructors and like to meet up
