There is something wonderfully inspiring about reading an article that clearly explains a complex scientific concept and makes one appreciate its beauty and significance. I strongly believe that making important scientific ideas accessible is one of the cornerstones that fuel and inspire innovative scientific thinking that can lead to meaningful impact. I hope to contribute to inspiring this in the Science Magazine readers. Being a science tutor has made me appreciate just how powerful clear scientific communication can be and has allowed me to explain critical scientific concepts clearly and accessibly while preserving their scientific rigor, which I hope to employ in this role. Undertaking a research project on the effectiveness of novel immunotherapy treatments for brain cancer, has made me fall in love with writing to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly and effectively, a skill I believe I have further developed through my role as a Project Leader for the UCL Cancer Charity Alliance writing project. I’m excited for this opportunity to contribute to the Science Magazine’s role in making scientific exploration a truly exciting pursuit regardless of one’s educational background. As the biology editor, I hope to convey the significance of the exciting developments in biomedical research and other biological disciplines, arrange workshops, and hopefully inspire a newly discovered passion for some of the fascinating aspects of biology in readers!

Diya Asawa

Hey everyone! I'm Diya and I'm studying Biomedical Sciences. I'm super thrilled to have been involved in the Science Magazine committee as a First Year Rep and would like to apply for the position of Biology Editor.

  • As a First Year Rep, I've loved getting to know the committee, helping brainstorm ideas for events, and co-writing Science Magazine's very first biweekly News-Bites! I love all things Biology - my favourite topics include neuroscience, pharmacology, and bioethics.
  • At UCL, I've also been involved with writing and editing articles for the MedTech Portal committee - I love reading other people's work and learning about their ideas. Often, having an informal chat and bouncing ideas off each other is a great way to find writing inspiration.
  • Writing has always been my favourite hobby, whether that's bioscience articles or poetry, so I understand its challenges and know how stressful it can be to experience a creative block or receive unhelpful feedback. Some of my favourite writing would not have been possible without the support of my peers and mentors, and I aim to be just as specific and helpful with my feedback.
  • Whether you are experienced or new to writing, I'd love to work with you and help you shape your article into a final product that you are proud of and can cherish for years to come!

If you'd like to read some of my Biology-related articles, do have a look at my newsletter, which I regularly update: https://diyaasawa.substack.com/

Micah Gerstner

BIOLOGY IS PRETTY COOL. I'd like others to think so too! I've been doing all kinds of writing since I was young, but as I enter my master's year I'm looking to engage in scientific writing while writing a masters.

Why Should I Vote For You?

  1. I have a deep understanding of biology. I've been studying it for 3 years now and have one more year left
  2. You'll get good feedback from me! I'll let you know where I think you can improve and I won't be mean about it.
  3. I give pretty good advice. Not sure where to look for ideas? Need help finding a source? I'm happy to help out!
  4. I'll find a nice looking picture for your article or make one for you!

Experience

In 2017-2018, I edited and designed pages for an art magazine as a part of my journalism class. From 2019-2021, I played a key role in my high school newspaper, the FIS Herald. There I was the Opinion Editor for the 2019-2020 school year, and then one of the Editors-in-Chief from 2020-2021. I took a break from writing when I transitioned to University because of health problems, but I still have experience in leadership, as the RPG Officer in Sci-Fi and Fantasy Society and the LGBTQ+ Officer.

YANG JIAO

As a first-year undergraduate student majoring in pharmacology, I am deeply passionate about the biological sciences and their intersection with human health. I am excited to nominate myself for the position of Biology editor within the Science Magazine Society to contribute my enthusiasm and skills to the editorial team. Although my academic focus is pharmacology, my coursework has provided me with a strong foundation in biology, including biochemistry, cellular biology, and human physiology. Additionally, my experience in writing gained through involvement in various academic projects and extracurricular activities, has equipped me with the necessary skills to excel in this role. I love the vibe of the society, where the collision of ideas and the spark of inspiration are palpable. I am committed to upholding the standards of excellence in scientific communication and fostering a collaborative environment within the editorial team. I am eager to leverage my passion for biology and my editing skills to contribute to the success of the Science Magazine Society.

Katie Kavanagh

Hey everyone, I am Katie, a second year NatSci student running for Biology Editor. As an editor and writer for a life science magazine this year, I have gained experience writing new articles and helping others by leaving constructive comments and suggestions in a way that does not remove the personality of the article or the individual writing style. Clarity and accuracy are highly important when communicating complex science to all audiences and are the main things I focus on when editing articles.

I really enjoy writing my own pieces, and also find it very interesting editing other people’s work and experiencing different writing styles. I understand how difficult and unfamiliar it can feel to begin writing as a science student. Because of this, I think it is important to encourage new writers, for example, by suggesting directions to take with their articles if they are finding the proposal difficult. I would love to have the chance to be the Biology Editor for the Science Magazine and continue the amazing standard of articles you publish.

James Lau Yi Wei

Hi Everyone!

My name is James and I am interested in running for either Chemistry editor or Biology editor for UCL Sci Mag in the next academic year! I am currently studying Pharmacy, a discipline which sits at the interface between Biology and Chemistry. Through reading and editing submissions, I wish to delve deeper in order to acquire a comprehensive understanding of concepts and topics that are beyond the scope of my degree from either of these two disciplines.

I have accumulated plenty of experience in writing and editing throughout the years. In high school, I studied both English language and Literature SL and History HL, as part of my International Baccalaureate Diploma and have written countless of essays for both subjects! Up to date, I have written two different articles for the society over two academic years: "Tackling the Synthetic Cannabinoid Epidemic" in 2023 and "Antibiotic resistance: The Gordian knot of the 21st Century." in 2024. I am confident that I now possess a well-refined set of writing and editing skills. Hence, I would like to step up to either of these roles to ensure that the society continues to publish high quality chemistry/biology articles on its website.

Thank you for considering me for the role of Chemistry editor/Biology Editor!
