Having been a member of UCL’s Portuguese Speaking Society for the past two years, I have noticed how its events are often a safe haven for Portuguese speakers, particularly those who had never lived in a foreign country before coming to London. As such, I am running for President with the aim of continuing  the society’s tradition of welcoming Portuguese speakers and fostering meaningful connections whilst promoting lively cultural and social events.

As President, I intend to increase the frequency of gatherings for members to get more opportunities to meet fellow Portuguese speakers and feel more “at home” in London. Coupled with this, I aim to promote more cross-cultural exchange opportunities by hosting more events related to specific Portuguese-speaking countries―such as events with tastings of Brazilian food, Portuguese wine, or pub crawls to watch our countries’ sports games. Furthermore, I will also attempt to close partnerships with small London-based businesses from Portuguese-speaking countries so that our members can have discounts when buying their favourite meals or objects from back home. Finally, I will expand the society’s most famous tradition of hosting parties by making the process more democratic, holding polls to find out what kinds of music, drinks, and themes the members would like to have.

I am eager to take on this role, and hope that you will consider voting for me.

Tomas Quintino Gouveia

Olá a todos!

This academic year has been one of ambitious change and development for our society. Alongside all of our committee members, I am proud of the result. Starting off with normalising our relations with the SU and developing a structure, and a new constitution; I have worked to facilitate and improve participation.

Last year, you elected me as treasurer on a program I believe I have fulfilled. By providing transparency and by helping to grow the society into the vibrant community that exists today; I am excited to call this year’s work a success. However, next year can be even brighter.

As president, my plan would have four focal points:

  • Continue the stabilisation and growth of our society’s funds to ensure the viability of our events, in collaboration with the future treasurer
  • Debut talks with other Portuguese-speaking groups in London universities right from the beginning of the year to develop strong and promising events
  • Work with Portuguese speakers at UCL and the SU to bring back Portuguese lessons, an integral part of our society in the past
  • Push for events for every member, whether bachelors or PhD students; Portuguese or Brazilian; party-people or politically oriented.

This society continues to provide the unique opportunity for me, and many others, to keep in touch with my language and my roots, to meet incredible people and to create long-lasting memories. It would be a privilege to continue on this journey with all of you,

Abraços

Oieee!!

I’m excited to announce that I am running for the position of President of our society! As your Event Coordinator this year, I've had the pleasure of organising various events, from cozy gatherings and dinners to fun dance workshops and insane parties. I'm also proud to have initiated and led the very first speaker event since the creation of the PSS, which introduced a new mission for our society of fostering diverse reflections about our countries.

If elected, I’m committed to continuing our celebration of the vibrant Lusophone cultures and bringing us even closer as a community. Our events and parties will continue to create that comforting ‘back home’ feeling and we’ll expand our academic discussions to an even larger scope.

On a more personal tone, I am very dedicated, reliable, sociable, and diplomatic - qualities that are essential to keep the society active and to maintain our valuable partnerships with the exceptional Brazilian/Portuguese societies from LSE, KCL, and ICL, with whom we have collaborated on many fantastic events this year!
