Shazia Sarela

I have a great passion for public health and medical policy and am keen to encourage a similar interest in my peers. My interest in medical policy and public health was cultivated during my position as the president of a Model UN society in school, and I have continued to learn about the field as President of UCL Students for Global Health Society and Deputy Chair for UCL Global Surgery. I am attending the BMA 2022 Student Conference this April to discuss national and international medical policy, and was invited to speak on the BBC Newswatch Segment in June 2021 regarding the prior use of the term ‘Indian Variant’ for the Delta Variant of the COVID-19 virus. I have written policies for SfGH UK regarding economic inequalities, race and racism in health and healthcare and data and information in medicine and am currently conducting computational research into the imposition of sanctions by the MPTS on doctors in the UK. I believe I would be well suited to the role of leadership, policy and public health lead due to my prior experience in the field, as well as my experience of event management having been part of the pre-clinical education subcommittee for Medical society and the WiNS mentorship scheme subcommittee. I have many ideas for the role including sessions for medical students on how doctors get sanctioned and how to avoid such proceedings, research into the role of incorrect literature in vaccine misinformation and collaborative events with other UCL societies.
