Join Seyi and the artsUCL community on the Wilkins Terrace for a screening of 'Lanterns' - an original musical created by two artsUCL Alumni!

Lanterns is set in the republic of China in 1934 during the New Life Movement and follows two very different women who are married to one ambitious merchant. An unusual family by Western standards, made up of one husband, one ‘official’ wife, a young concubine and a mother, their ordinary life is thrown into turmoil as the Merchant brings home another concubine, and the two young women fall for each other. They are further disrupted by political change as the Merchant seeks to join the ‘Blue Shirts’, a far-right fascist party, and also by secrecy, familial duties, strict rules, and gossip. The music is influenced by 1930s Shanghai Bund pop, Hu Opera, and Shidaiqu (Chinese folk/American jazz fusion).

The piece will last about an hour and will be screened on our outdoor pop-up cinema on the Wilkins Terrace (don't worry it is covered!)

There will also be some snacks and traditional decorations around to help you get into the festivities of Lunar New Year!
