Louise Saukila / Maryam Bandukda
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
Together, Maryam and I hope to continue the excellent work of the exiting officer Ashana to speak out and campaign for those who have to balance student life with caring responsibilities and to point students in the right direction for support. Together, we will be a stronger voice, working with Academic Reps and UCL EDI to ensure consideration and awareness of students who face the daily challenge of fulfilling their dual responsibilities to study and to look after the person or children they care for, advocating inclusion and fair support of these students at different levels.
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?
Maryam and I bring our experience from being committee members of the newly formed UCL Student Parents and Carers Society, a society we are both passionate about and keen to develop further. We both have young children, so fully understand the challenges of balancing student life and commitment to studies alongside having caring responsibilities at home. We are both approachable and collaborate well with others, hoping to use these skills to partner with other student welfare officers to develop and disseminate resources to support mental health of students with caring responsibilities.
