Katherine Horton

My name is Katherine, and I’m running to be your Communications Officer for the coming year!

If you’ve been on hikes with the society this year, there’s a good chance you already know me as a walk leader. I’ve had a great time meeting you all so far, and am excited to apply what I’ve learnt about what makes the society so wonderful to help improve it even further. I have huge amounts of experience hiking both with the club and solo (including many hikes over 50km and even one 100km, though I enjoy shorter hikes too!), so I am confident with exactly what you need for a successful hike.

I also have experience on society committees – during my undergrad, I spent two years chairing a committee in Cambridge. My responsibilities included managing both the society social media and email, which is experience I can apply directly to a role as the Communications Officer for Hiking Club. I also learnt about the general organisation and responsibilities associated with running a society, which will allow me to support the rest of the team.

As your Communications Officer, I will work to keep the club as welcoming as possible, both for experienced hikers and complete beginners. I’ll provide all the information you might need to prepare for and enjoy our hikes and, as always, I would be happy to answer any questions or give any advice, whether on the club or just hiking in general.

Whoever you vote for, I hope to see you on many more hikes in the future!

Rushdania Iqbal

The question, 'Is this memeworthy?' is often my preferred approach to documenting wholesome moments. you know the usual, hiking up a mountain and recording your friends getting stuck in a mini bog, sort of moments. As an aspiring editor (still a noob), these trivial but amusing moments are just what I live for, along with the tranquil, cinematic vistas of Earth's wonders (If interested IG: rushnotfolio). Encouraging even one potential member to join, whether through Instagram posts or weekly socials, would mean the world (I'm serious). I'm a first year studying AIS (Architecture and Interdisciplinary studies) and for part of my Term 1 portfolio, I wrote an article emphasising my passion in diversifying the hiking platform, and would love to utilise this role to portray hiking as a sport availabe to anyone, regardless of their experience or background. The hiking club clearly achieves this and continues to spread this message, therefore who wouldn't want to be a member of such a welcoming community? If you'd like to be captured in wholesome moments, vote for me :). That and I can turn you into a meme (with permission).

With Peace and Love, Rush :)

Ryoma Okabe

Hi everyone, my name is Ryoma Okabe and I’m a first-year Geography student. I am running for Communication Officer, as browsing stunning photos on instagram was what first got me into hiking. Since then, I became an intermediate hiker, my favourite being the 3,776m Mt Fuji trek in Japan (a UNESCO World Heritage Site, I took this photo at the summit!

From this background, as the Communication Officer, I will enliven our Instagram, Facebook and Discord to inspire new hikers. I also aim to inject life into our Youtube channel, posting digests of the hikes. On top of announcing events early, I intend to publicise and outreach charity events more (eg. This Girl Can, LGBTQ+, BAME, Ukraine, Turkey-Syria etc). By promoting such events, I think we can increase the inclusivity and public impact of our Hiking Club.

I have a rich experience of organising events, for instance, being the Producer of my high school’s Graduation Ceremony. With my seniors, I worked especially hard on creating memory-lane videos to begin and end the ceremony. I also negotiated with the parents’ union so that the ceremony could be documented and temporarily streamed on Youtube afterwards. These experiences taught me how to generate enthusiasm, not just amongst members, but potential members as well. I am confident that my creativity will be an asset to UCL Hiking.
