Having been Events officer for First Generation UCL for a year, I have appreciated the importance of first generation representation at university and beyond, and I wish to continue to work on this in my position as Welfare officer this year.

Being a first generation student at university can be difficult, especially at a big university like UCL. As welfare officer, I hope to organise well-being socials like arts and crafts, movie nights and open discussion groups for students to come together to debrief on any issues they are experiencing as first generation students, as students from similar backgrounds tend to understand and appreciate such issues better.

I hope to highlight the importance of community via regular checks on society and committee members to ensure no one is feeling overwhelmed either with university work, committee responsibilities or life in general.

The importance of collaborations cannot be understated, and as such I will be proactive in working with societies and networks we can collaborate with to build a bigger community and host socials that improve mental health for all students - examples include Art society, meditation society and even sci-fi and fantasy society!

Working with the events officer, I will ensure members have a safe space to come to with their concerns, worries and issues so that no one is left out amongst the challenging time that university can be.
