The Hey Team is back

We've started the Hey Team 2 years ago, to make new students feel welcome, to share experiences and help new arrivals start an exciting new chapter of their lives: studying at UCL. So far over 60 Hey Team volunteers have supported and met hundreds of new students at over 100 events during our Welcome periods.

After the positive impact this has made, we're now looking for this year's Hey Team. Whether you were part of the team in previous years, are keen to give it a go in 2020, or are simply curious to find out more, we'd like to hear from you.

About the Hey Team

We all know starting university can be a stressful and lonely time for some people. Think back to how you felt about arriving in London and on campus for the first time, not knowing where to even start.

The Hey Team are a group of friendly and enthusiastic volunteers who want to make a difference and help ease new students into new surroundings and welcoming them into the UCL family. It’s a fantastic way to give back, meet new people and develop your skills.

Some comments from previous Hey Team volunteers:

"In one of the welcome BBQ events, I, along with other Hey Team volunteers, met up with a guy from China who was the only person not talking to someone. After chatting a bit about his culture and making sure we were not needed any longer at the event, we all bought Bubble tea together and exchanged phone numbers."

"It was very enjoyable to make people happy and brighten their day!"

"I've made loads of new friends and made sure the new students had a great time too. I'd say the ice cream social was my favourite."

What will I need to do?

Being part of The Hey Team is incredibly flexible and will allow you to do as much or as little as you want.

The Hey Team will be based around the main campus, from the week before term starts to meet and greet new students, answer their queries and promote social events and opportunities. For those who are interested, there is also the chance to volunteer at some of our evening Welcome Events (we'll share the events line-up as soon as possible). We will provide training so that you always know what you’re talking about. More than anything, we want you and the new students to have fun.

Whether you're an early bird or a night owl, there are plenty of shifts to fit around your availability.

Depending on your availability and your interests, you will be asked to:

  • Provide a friendly welcome to new students as they arrive on campus and during the Welcome period
  • "Host" Students' Union Welcome Breakfasts and lunches (talk to new students, signpost them to relevant events and activities and answer questions that will help them to settle into life at UCL)
  • Be present at social events (such as games night, quiz night, comedy night etc. - be there, talk to students and ask whether they are okay and check whether they know the event programme and what to do next etc.)
  • Be familiar with information on local amenities, support and opportunities offered by Students' Union UCL (info and training will be provided)
  • Be proactive in promoting Students' Union activities and events such as the Welcome Fair, Give It A Go and volunteering one-off

What’s in it for you?

First of all, you will have an unforgettable experience welcoming the next generation of students to UCL. You'll pick up lots of new skills and make new friends along the way. In return for your precious time and wonderful smiles you will also receive:

  • Branded Tshirt and hoodie
  • Queue pass to the Welcome Fair (just imagine jumping that hour-long queue and getting right through to the fun bits)
  • Food and Drink for each shift from our cafes
  • Free entry to one ticketed Welcome event (you will be able to choose from quite a line-up)
  • Ticket to our end of Welcome Thank-you Event
  • Travel expenses (inner London zones)
  • Further opportunities to be involved in Union events and volunteering

What do I do next?

Applications for this year's team is open and we're very much looking forward to hearing from you.
