We often think of art in relation to politics. Art can claim political relevance in various ways. There are things like “protest songs” and visual artworks that seek to express the unique “experience” of an oppressed group, for example. This teach-in explores how we might think about the relationship of art, history (progress, stagnation and defeat), (Left) politics, and freedom. It focuses specifically on the Frankfurt school theorist Theodor Adorno’s writings on music, but the ideas have implications for other forms of art as well. The talk is followed by a Q&A and open discussion.
