Marie Curie
Marie Curie is the UK’s leading end of life charity. We provide frontline nursing and hospice care, a free support line and a wealth of information and support on all aspects of dying, death and bereavement. Now more than ever, we need your help to support people with a terminal illness and their families.
Description

Marie Curie Companions is an amazing service provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal or life-limiting illness. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if it was not for the commitment and hard work of the volunteers delivering the service.

Companion volunteers provide companionship and emotional support; practical support; short breaks for carers; and help with signposting for information and support.  From simply having a cup of tea and chat, to going out for short walks together, you can make a huge difference with as little as 1-3 hours a week.

This role is so helpful in supporting people who may have become disconnected or isolated due to their illness. We are looking for caring empathetic people who want to improve someone's end of life experience.

Duties
  • Spending 1-3 hours a week with your match suffering with a terminal or life limiting illness in their home or out in their community.
  • Keeping your manger updated with short weekly reports on how the match is going.
  • Attending a half day training to make sure you are prepared for the role.
  • Reporting any issues or questions you have to your manager.
Who will the volunteers be working with?
You will be working with one client who has a life-limiting or terminal illness.
Training
You will attend an in person or online half day training which will fully prepare you for the role. The training will include more information about what someone with a terminal illness will be going through. Safeguarding, to make sure you and your client are always safe and happy, plus some potential scenarios to help you mentally prepare for the role.

Time commitment

The commitment is very flexible but we ask for individuals to be able to commit for at least a year to the role. The visits are usually once a week for 1-3 hours, depending on your availability and the needs of the client.
