Rathbone’s Inspiring Learning project supports young people aged 11-19 from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those on free school meals. Our mission is to help these young people bridge the gap between their aspirations and academic attainment, equipping them with the confidence and skills to succeed.

Role Purpose
As a Volunteer Learning Mentor, you will provide one-on-one homework and study skills support, acting as a positive role model. Your contribution will help boost young people's confidence, enhance their educational attainment, and improve their long-term employability.

 

Duties

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide homework and study skills support to a young person in a specific subject and year group of your choice.
  • Help build the young person’s confidence and self-esteem while encouraging realistic aspirations.
  • Offer subject-specific guidance for students preparing for GCSEs, including revision and exam preparation.
  • Support the young person’s understanding and use of English, if necessary.
  • Maintain professional and sensitive mentoring relationships, respecting cultural differences and personal boundaries.
  • Arrange weekly sessions with the project worker and communicate any changes or absences promptly.
  • Report any concerns or issues to the project worker immediately.
  • Attend an induction session and adhere to Rathbone’s policies on Equal Opportunities, Health & Safety, and Confidentiality.

Who will the volunteers be working with?
Young people aged 11-18
Training
Volunteers are provided with all training necessary to carry out the role. Rathbone provide educational resources needed.

Time commitment

We encourage our learning mentors to aim for a commitment of at least one hour each week (excluding travel time) for a period of about six months, with mentoring sessions typically taking place between 4 pm and 8 pm. If you’re unable to make this commitment or have a holiday of more than seven days planned during your placement, please feel free to reach out to us by phone or email to discuss other possibilities, as we may still be able to match you with a mentee.
