Headucate UCL
Headucate UCL aims to tackle mental health stigma and end discrimination by running interactive workshops in schools around London! We will be working with school children and are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our team - no prior experience/knowledge required.Sign up to keep up to date with what's going on this year :)
Description

Hello!

We're Headucate and we are a UK-wide student organisation that tackle stigma and raise awareness of mental health in schools. It is thought that 50% of lifelong mental illness is already established by the age of 14, but mental health teaching in schools is often variable and sometimes lacking altogether.

That's where we step in. We run small workshops to inform students and teenagers about what mental health is, misconceptions, good practices, and signposting. We'll provide you with the training to run these sessions and you can take part in as many as you'd like. We recognise that uni life is hectic so we try to be as flexible as possible. Beyond the workshops, we have a variety of talks, socials, and other events as part of our partnership with our parent organisation, Headucate UK.

It's a great opportunity to promote better mental health practices in young people, develop your skills in leadership and teaching, and join an awesome community of Headucators nationally!

Duties

You will be involved in running mental health workshops at schools in London. Training for these workshops will be provided, so don't worry about not knowing what to talk about - everyone is welcome!

Who will the volunteers be working with?
School children - usually secondary students (11-16).
Training
We will provide new volunteers with a training session. You are also asked to complete online training about working with children before volunteering. Schools may ask volunteers for a DBS check, which can be done through the SU. We will provide all the information about what we need from you prior to beginning volunteering in schools!

Time commitment

We usually require 2 volunteers per workshop, which will usually last 1-2 hours. Depending on the number of volunteers and schools, we may also run multiple workshops a week.

We recognise that the timings and days depend on both the school and volunteer's availability, so we do not ask for a regular commitment. Feel free to commit to as many sessions as you would like.

This is an opportunity offered by a Student-Led Volunteering Project. It is run by UCL students and supported and supervised by staff in Students' Union UCL Volunteering Service.
