Candidates

Jaimie K Y Leung

My name is Jaimie Leung and I am a second-year Psychology with Education student running for Charity Officer for the second year. I was only elected at the beginning of the second term due to Charity Officer being a new position, and helped plan out crocheting little hats as part of Age UK's innocent big knit (unfortunately, I fell ill with Covid-19 and wasn't able to attend the session - which my other committee members took charge of). I hope to run another session like this once more this term. If elected, I hope to continue with developing this charitable event and hopefully make it a tradition within the KnitSoc. I also hope to develop longer projects that the society as a whole could work together on, such as making a big blanket to donate. I would also hope to work with the Collaborations Officer to propose fundraising events alongside crafting for a good cause.

Nicole Wood

I am passionate about knitting and charity and I think I would bring a lot of unique and insightful ideas to the knitting society. I am a compassionate person and am enthusiastic about helping others, and can organise projects and events well. I got into knitting as a more sustainable way to make clothes and gifts as sustainability is very important to me. I think I could push this agenda forward and get more people into knitting and crochet for this reason, I also think I could come up with creative ways to raise money for charities that push for sustainability. I would like to raise money for charities such as Action aid, WWF, crisis, and would ask for input from society members so that the charities we help align with our values.

Srishti Thakur

My name is Srishti and I am a 2nd year History, Politics and Economics student and I think I would be an awesome candidate for the General of Generosity.

Arts and craft is something that I always aspired to do and getting the opportunity to participate in this society allowed me to indulge into a new hobby.

I really enjoy helping people and during secondary school and the pandemic, I volunteered with many different organisations and most recently the NHS. I have a an extremely bubbly personality and I believe having a smile on your face is the most useful form of communication. In these roles, I have seen how a simple act of generosity can change a person’s day.

From being in this society, I have discovered that making our own clothes can be cheaper and if I was bestowed this role I believe we could use this principle to help those in need, for example refugees or homeless crisis in London. I would try to work Student Union volunteering services so that we could work with the younger generation to show how knitting and crocheting are a more sustainable lifestyle, especially with the growth in fast-fashion. Also, it’s a great skill to have and it is super fun!

I hope that if we collectively combine our skills in knitting society we can help local communities. This can happen is so many different formats from workshops to socials to anyone who really wants to get more involved with charity work.
