Debating has always been a huge part of my uni experience. It’s given me a welcoming community even when my first year was remote, and my role as Tournament Convener this year allowed me to understand the circuit better too. In my final year, I hope to further my dedication and serve as your President.
First, I’m in good standing as a debater to lead DebSoc. I’ve been debating for nearly four years, breaking into the ESL Semi-Finals at Doxbridge 2, and breaking open in other Asian regional tournaments. I’ve also recently broken as a judge in Imperial Novices 2021. Being Tournament Convener has further added another facet to my experiences, making me well-placed to support every committee member in their roles.
Second, I possess the skills needed for this leadership role. Convening five tournaments this year has not only massively trained my organisational and admin skills, but has taught me how to effectively communicate among team members and keep a level head during crises. Having served as Captain of the English Debate Team at my previous university, I have first-hand knowledge on leading a team whilst also managing the administrative side of the Society.
Third, I can bring in fresh initiatives to maintain the overall quality and quantity of our members, including an attendance system, an internal tab system, merchandise, and higher utilisation of other channels like YouTube, Twitter, or our website.
I want to help lead UCL debate to continue to succeed as a club and become even better in the future
Hi everyone! I'm Manca and I have been your Publicity Officer this year. As such, I was involved with every aspect of society – be it trainings, public debates, social events, or competitions. This enabled me to see the potential in each of the respective sectors, and as President, I'd be able to contribute to society by implementing my ideas for improvement across the board.
By being involved with our society for 3 years now, I've shown great commitment that I'd like to take even further. As the most experienced candidate, I have the necessary skill set to lead the committee and to create a wholesome community you will come back to every week.
As President I will:
1) create a community where everyone feels welcome and accepted. While we all share the same interest in debating, people come back because they feel great in our society and make bonds that go beyond debating.
2) ensure the society runs smoothly. Be it organising meetings, managing deadlines, or resolving conflicts, my past experience on the committee allowed me to thoroughly grasp the inner workings of the committee, and specifically the role of the President.
3) help and guide fellow committee members to bring our game to the next level. Be it tapping into more sponsorship and partnership opportunities, organising more social events, or making our society more inclusive, together we will give our members the best possible experience.
