Communication Society: Welfare & Mentorship Officer

I love communicating. I'd like to be the Welfare Officer because I enjoy getting involved, talking to others, listening and helping them problem solve. My friends call me Sunshine for my warm personality, positivity and can-do spirit. I’m known for wanting to help and I think that is such an important quality for this post because it allows members to communicate openly and effectively.  

The Welfare and Mentorship Officer is, perhaps, the backbone of any Communication Society because negotiations rely so heavily on comfort and openness. Any serious issue requires the involved parties to feel validated and easy so that they can listen, speak and navigate the path to a solution as a team instead of working from places of negativity.

I’ve always been a dreamer, a communicator, an artist but, besides that, people perpetually comment on my reliability and dedication. So, if you give me the chance, I can guarantee that I will be extremely enthusiastic about everything I do as I have always proven throughout my experiences in various student government positions. This year, I was also the President of the Yoga and Meditation Club so I am familiar with the nuances of society management. 

I believe there will be so much to learn in this role and that I, through my own distinct experiences will be able to teach and contribute as I learn. If my passion has shone through my words then please consider voting for me!

Hello everyone! I am Natalie, a year 2 NatSci student running for Welfare & Mentorship Officer. I joined the society quite late without knowing any member previously, but soon felt at home thanks to the amazing committee who has created such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere in every event. As an introverted student from abroad, I find navigating in a new environment, forming connections and making contributions can be very challenging no matter how much I want to, especially after long periods of social distancing due to COVID-19. The society has therefore helped me realise the importance of inclusivity, and I would like to continue the legacy. I also want to take a step further and facilitate more communication from members, particularly by liaising with other committee members to devise an extensive member feedback system, ranging from direct messages to polls and forms. The goal is to enable members (i.e., you!) to play a more active role, and in turn receive more support. As an international STEM student even before UCL, and an active member in the student council and numerous collaborative projects, I respect and empathise with different points of view. I am confident in finding common grounds but also making impartial judgement, which are useful in resolving conflicts. Overall, you can rest assured I will listen and help resolve your concern, as well as maintain an inclusive environment for everyone. Thanks for your time and hope to be of service next year!

Hi! This is Ivy, the most ENERGETIC speaker in UCL Communication Society! I am running for the position of the welfare and mentorship officer because I want to help everyone to be better at giving speeches via valuable evaluations.

This academic year, I have been an active member of UCL Communication Society, during which I have been voted twice to be giving the best quick-fire speech. I myself has also been taken part in the speech mentorship programme and I found myself beneficial from it. Therefore, I want to popularise it so that more students can get their public speaking skills improved. 

When it comes to public speaking skills, I have attended several speech competitions in the past as well as receiving several rewards, before the pandemic, but my public speaking skills went through a dormant period because of the restriction for social activities at the start of my university life. Now as I am going to become a final year student, I want to make up for the missed time that I should spend with giving speeches!
