Idea for research
Run by volunteers and launched in 2021, the Islington Climate Centre is a vibrant community hub and a solution-oriented education centre, building community resilience and adaptation for a sustainable future in Islington and beyond. We are an important connector in the sustainability space, linking together communities, organisations, and authorities to engage and connect people through thought leadership and community events.

We regularly run People’s Assemblies on climate issues, inspired by the movement in participatory decision-making. Recent topics at our People’s Assemblies have included shade and flooding.

We are seeking a master’s student to produce a research project on the People’s Assemblies movement. We are flexible in terms of the directions and methodologies this project may take but key themes could be:
• Deliberative democracy and participatory decision-making
• Community-led climate action
• UK climate movement

The student would be encouraged to attend our People’s Assemblies to observe and collect data for their dissertation. We have connections across the climate movement and corporate sustainability sector, and we are happy to help arrange other opportunities for the student to attend People’s Assemblies if this would be useful.
Impact of idea
The Centre is entirely volunteer run so having a dedicated master’s student applying their research skills to our mission will be massively impactful in itself!

This project will enable us to:
• Map the broader movement which we are a small part of.
• Understand innovations in climate governance and community climate action.
• Improve and scale up our People’s Assemblies.
• Document our impact to stakeholders and funders.

Ideally, the student would distil their findings from this research into several shorter policy briefs which we could share on our website and with media contacts, as their Community Product.

If you have any existing data or information you would like included in a project, please tell us what kind of data these are

What new data or information would you like to be collected in this project?
