A fun Bharatnatyam class where you can learn or develop your skills at traditional Indian dance forms such as Bharatanatyam and Kathak. This is a taster class so feel free to come and try it out!

Bharatanatyam, which originated in the temples of Tamil Nadu in southern India, is one of the oldest classical dance forms, deeply rooted in spirituality and devotion. The name comes from "bha" (bhava, meaning expression), "ra" (raga, meaning melody), and "ta" (tala, meaning rhythm), embodying the essential elements of this intricate art form. Originally performed as a form of devotional offering to deities, Bharatanatyam narrates stories from Indian mythology, particularly from texts like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas.

Through precise hand gestures (mudras), dynamic footwork, and expressive facial movements, Bharatanatyam conveys profound emotions and themes, blending storytelling with rhythm and melody. Over time, while it transitioned from temples to stage performances, the dance has retained its sacred essence and rigorous technical structure.

Bharatanatyam represents core Indian values—devotion, discipline, and spirituality. It is more than just a performance art; it is a spiritual journey and a celebration of India’s timeless culture, connecting the dancer and audience to a shared heritage of faith and philosophy.
