As the Equity and Inclusion Officer at Students’ Union UCL, I am dedicated to creating spaces where every student feels seen, represented, and empowered. Throughout my journey as a student and my involvement in the arts, I have witnessed the challenges faced by emerging artists, especially those from marginalised communities—POC, disabled, LGBTQ+ individuals, and women. In a city like London, where class and privilege often dictate opportunities, finding a platform to exhibit one’s work can feel like an uphill battle.
This project, Liberate: The Phineas Art Gallery, was created to break down those barriers. Phineas is a space where students gather to socialise, unwind, and connect. By reimagining it as a gallery, we’re giving student artists from marginalised communities the opportunity to showcase their work in a place as central as London.
The exhibitions will be tied to liberation months—Black History Month, Disability History Month, LGBTQ+ History Month, and Women’s History Month—aligning with our goal to uplift the voices of communities who are often underrepresented. During these months, we will invite submissions from student artists who explore themes related to these identities and experiences. Whether you’re reflecting on identity, activism, or personal journeys, this gallery is a place for your art to be seen and celebrated.
Due to limited space, a competitive selection process will be in place. Myself, along with the Arts Student Officer and a relevant community officer for each liberation month, will review and select the works that will be displayed. This ensures that each exhibition not only showcases artistic talent but also reflects the values of equity and inclusion that these months represent. Please note that during the decision process, liberation networks members’ works will be prioritised.
Here's what you submitted in the past...
Liberate is about more than art—it’s about reclaiming space for student voices that have been historically sidelined. We aim to create a platform where artists from marginalised backgrounds can shine, and where their contributions are acknowledged and celebrated in one of the world’s most prestigious cities. Through this project, we hope to foster a community where diversity is embraced and creativity is given room to flourish.
We are so excited to see Phineas transformed by your powerful, thought-provoking, and inspiring artwork. Thank you for being part of this important journey. Let’s make Liberate: The Phineas Art Gallery a space that reflects the strength and diversity of UCL’s student community.
