After fulfilling the role of Head of Events on the Diplomacy committee for the last year, I am excited to apply for a new role and tackle the separation between our committee and our members.
As Welfare Officer, giving the society opportunities to socialise outside of the traditional, formal setting that may be associated with diplomacy is of utmost importance. The key lesson that I have learnt from my experience with diplomats is the importance of relationships in the field; while we hold incredibly interesting events, I will aim to organise a diverse range of social events to allow members to network and to integrate the committee back into the society. This may include conventional pub gatherings, but I also want to branch out further than that to include everyone and take recommendations straight from members.
Additionally, a welfare officer is responsible for the wellness of individuals within the society and any concerns they have. Within this role, I would like to focus on the diversity and inclusion aspect of welfare, especially because diversity in the diplomatic field is exceptionally high.
The UCL Diplomacy Society is an accessible way to explore an interest in international relations, negotiating and politics in general. To maintain our position as an influential and inclusive society, I want to improve outreach and integration throughout the whole society.
Being part of the Diplomacy Society has been a highlight of my first year at UCL. From the Pizza and Politics socials to all of the Embassy visits, I have learnt so much about the world of Diplomacy and what this field has to offer. None of that would be possible without the warm and friendly atmosphere created by the members of our society and as your Welfare Officer, this is something I want to continue developing for the following year.
Being one of the largest political societies at UCL means that we are able to provide the best opportunities to those interested in pursuing a career in foreign affairs. As your Welfare Officer, my goal is to ensure that every member of our society can benefit from these opportunities.
Inclusivity is a core tenet of any society and considering the global nature of Diplomacy, I want our society to be a community, which welcomes people from all walks of life. This year alone, I have met so many interesting people through the Diplomacy Society and although we all have lived very different lives, our passion for global affairs brought us closer together. I have plans to host many induction events next year, so we can all get to know each other and become part of the UCL Diplomacy family.
As your Welfare Officer, I want to strengthen the interpersonal relations within our society and provide a platform for all budding diplomats to come together. Let's make next year the most succesful year in our Diplomacy Society's history!
