Freya E Eke-Cunis

Hello everyone, I’m Freya, a second year studying Politics and International Relations with a real interest in diplomacy, conflict resolution and peacekeeping. I have really enjoyed my role as Head of Events this year and would be honoured to continue working within the Committee.

Having been part of the Society for two years I have built a good understanding of how both the Society and Committee run. I loved organising the Dutch Embassy visit, and, through working within the Head of Events team, alongside the Committee, I understand how the event-planning process works. I would feel confident coordinating teams and ensuring everything runs smoothly next year. I am also a member of one of the teams organising the London University Diplomatic Summit, therefore am already developing experience regarding how the event is organised, and would be excited to play a larger role in developing it next year.

Outside of my course I am Fitness Captain of the UCL Swimming Club, therefore I am used to, and enjoy, taking on responsibilities outside of my studies. The role involves mentoring swimmers of all abilities to improve their confidence as a personable and encouraging Captain. I am a collaborative team-player with a broad communication skillset, having been Deputy Head Girl and Political Editor of the school newspaper during Sixth Form.

I am a friendly and dedicated individual, always willing to listen to new suggestions.

Thank you for your consideration!

Moulika Shome

Hi!

My name is Moulika and I am a first year BSc Politics and International Relations student. I am running for the vice-president role of the Diplomacy Society, and this is because I enjoy learning about all things related to diplomacy! I believe that I am an ideal candidate for this role because I have previous experience in leading a society. Moreover, as someone who comes from an underrepresented background, I will be able to provide input to improve the diversity of this society!

In my sixth form, I used to be the co-president of the Feminist Society. As part of this, I led discussions on improving political and government representation for women. From these discussions, we found that women face multiple barriers that prevent them from achieving high positions in government. Unfortunately, this is also true for the diplomacy field, especially if they are BAME. As vice-president of the society, I will encourage talks and discussions with BAME women who are currently in the field. I will also work with the events officer to create more embassy/high commission trips where the ambassadors are women.

Furthermore, I will collaborate with the Diplomacy Review team to ensure that the articles and the termly journal has a diverse range of views. I believe that by doing this, DipSoc members from underrepresented backgrounds will feel more empowered to engage with foreign affairs and the wider realm of diplomacy!

Thank you!

Moulika

Gabrielle Tay

As your first year representative for the past academic year, I have gained insights into the inner workings of our society. I’ve actively stepped up to increase engagement with our members, organise events and assist in administrative and logistical matters. I’m thankful to be part of such an incredible society that has put forward high-quality events, and I’d love to bring it to greater heights.

Here, in brief, are my aspirations for our society:

1) External Aims

  • Expanding the scope of our visits to organisations like the Commonwealth Secretariat, Chatham House, IMO etc.
  • Venturing out of our largely Eurocentric focus and into regions like Asia for our visits / events
  • Working with the Careers Officer to bring about relevant career workshops, internships and volunteering opportunities
  • Building relations with UCL / London societies through active collaborations
  • Publicity for The Diplomacy Review, such as for our journalists’ articles

2) Internal Aims

  • Your interests matter: involving members in choosing future event topics
  • Consistent social events (both academic and non-academic)
  • Committee:
    • Compiling all past contacts for accessibility
    • Cohesive publicity: updating our website, communication platforms

I would love to hear your opinions on my aforementioned points - do drop me an email at [email protected] or come down for our hustings if you are interested to learn more!

Thank you! :)
