I am standing for the position of Welfare and Volunteering Officer as the post combines two areas I have loved working in, both at school and UCL. I now want to use that experience to help shape what Law for All Society can do for the UCL community between 2022/23. Being a transition mentor this year was an incredibly rewarding experience and I can’t wait to continue being an accessible, supportive figure for our community. My time volunteering in legal and non-legal organisations both in the U.K. and abroad has been a great way to combine rewarding leisure work and industry exposure so I am super keen to publicise and expand such opportunities to the UCL community so we all have the chance to decompress away from studies and meet incredible, inspiring figures along the way.
I am running for the role of Welfare and Volunteering Officer because I hope to ensure that Law for All remains a supportive and inclusive environment for all. Speaking from experience as a second-year history student, trying to find your way into a legal career from a non-law background can certainly be daunting enough as is. As such, I would love the opportunity to help foster a welcoming space for people to get involved. Gender and racial barriers and discrimination will not stand, and I promise to act as a point of contact for anyone who may encounter any issues or inappropriate behaviour in this regard.
In terms of volunteering, I have previously acted as a mentor to students at a local secondary school and have participated in fundraising campaigns, such as for the Great Ormond Street Hospital. I can attest to how rewarding these experiences have been and believe that they have equipped me with the ability to bring a level of care and patience in order to see things through. If elected, I aim to liaise with various charities and organisations to help broaden our network as a society and to encourage participation in these activities.
Overall, the welfare of Law for All is extremely important and I will do my best to safeguard against any issues, even if that simply means being a friendly presence in the day-to-day goings of the society. I am always open for a chat and hope you will trust me with this role.
