Hello everyone! I’m Mat and am very excited to be running for president of the UCL Karate Club. I have trained Shotokan Karate for over 5 years and believe this position is a great addition to my martial art journey (and yours ?).
As current welfare officer, I have observed issues within the society that I will address as president. The Karate Club has not reached its full potential with regards to activities and growth.
Initial improvements include more involvement in UCL sports events and taking full advantage of welcome weeks and taster sessions to expose the Karate Club. Karate is very important to me mentally and physically and I aspire to spread this mentality, especially given it has helped me cope with my heavy workload and stress.
Further topics I will address include the incorporation of more Karate-related events for society members to attend. Training is essential, but so is the history of Karate, our Dojo and Karate etiquette amongst other less addressed topics.More regular socials outside training are also necessary to grow closer as a Dojo.
Although I am thrilled to be running for president, I cannot ignore my experience as welfare officer and will continue to focus on increasing the confidence of trainees in order for all members to perform at their best capabilities.
As president, I will push our society to its full potential. I am looking forward to sharing my dedication to Karate and encourage you to love this martial art as much as I do!
Hello! I'm Thistle, a NatSci student and proud member of UCL Karate Club.
One of the things I admire about our club is how everyone's always encouraged to progress, and take their karate to the next level. I'm excited to keep learning and improving and, as such, I would love to take on a leadership position as President.
Together we have the potential to make our club even better, and I'd love to work with you all to make that happen. For instance, I think organizing a friendly tournament with other local universities could be a great way to prepare for BUCS in future and motivate everyone who wishes to participate, something we've discussed as a team before. Additionally, it could be enriching to host a few one-off sessions with people of different self defense backgrounds (non-karate) to learn about their approach to self defense.
President or not, you can rely on me if you need support, or if you want to learn a new Shotokan kata (pretend you didn't see that Jonathan...!)
If you have any questions DM me @thistle.prickle on Instagram or text me on WhatsApp. Or just ask me at training (and you can count on me to be at the bar afterwards)
Thanks for your support
