The UCL fencing society is a proud and long-standing club, and deserves strong and effective leadership to match. I believe that as an intermediate fencer I can bring a new perspective to the committee, and can sympathise with the problems newer fencers face. Many of you will be aware that we have a shortage of working swords, and it is often a struggle to find working gear that fits properly. This is something that I intend to remedy. If I am elected treasurer I will move towards a more economical source for equipment. Club equipment doesn't have to be from the most famous or expensive brands, it just has to be usable and reliable. In this vein I have looked into alternate suppliers and have found several which would significantly reduce replacement costs, alleviating the shortage. I will also support the establishment of a minimum required quality and amount of usable gear (swords, score boxes, jackets etc) to be available at sessions, whereby resources would be allocated to replenish supplies if they fell bellow this level. These measures will ensure that all of our members will always have access to robust, clean, usable gear.
I believe that the primary function of a sports club is training, but I believe that an important secondary function is to enable the forging of new contacts and friendships. Therefore I believe that a budget should be also dedicated to social events, so that members may meet more frequently, forging relationships outside the salle.
