Czech and Slovak Society: President

The main reason why I am running for president of the UCL Czech & Slovak Society is that the society and its members are both very close to my heart. Back in my first year, this society has made me feel the most welcome and its members quickly became my closest friends here in London.

Apart from being a family-like community, we are of course a cultural society – both Czech AND Slovak. I know that with a committee that is mostly made up of Czechs, our events might sometimes feel almost too Czech for our Slovak members. Therefore, I want to improve in this aspect and get more Slovak input into our events. Another thing I want to focus on is communication with other Czech and Slovak societies in the UK. In this post-Brexit era, it is more important than ever that we stick together and keep our little community alive. I also really want to further develop our alumni network for both social and professional reasons, create some new cool merch (cooler than the Hanger hoodies), and of course organise loads of amazing events (think pub socials, hikes, pofely v parku, and hopefully a Czech and Slovak ball or a big formal dinner).

Most importantly, I want this society to remain a safe space that all of us can run to whenever we feel a little homesick. Or if you're a foreigner, a safe space where you can always explore and enjoy our two amazing cultures!
