Community Change is the part of the Students' Union that works with Student Leaders to make positive changes here at UCL and beyond. Our work ranges from campaigns, policy-change, events, resource creation and more. In our 'Spotlight On' series, you will get to know some of your Student Leaders and learn about the great work they are doing. First up is our BME Women's Rep, Joelle!
Hi Joelle! What have you been up to recently?
I had an event last week for BME women and it was a self-portrait session - in the beginning we were doing some basic fundamental drawing skills with the face. Next we told everyone to pick a colour and use the one they liked the most. we spent an hour painting ourselves. It was a nice opportunity to get some women together, talk and meet other women at UCL. It was a really successful event!
Why did you put the event on?
I thought that it was a really nice way to meet other BME women at UCL and I personally have a passion for creative arts so I thought it was a nice thing to do. It was not very academic and you don't really have to think. It was nice to relax and chill with other women in a not very intense space.
Any highlights?
The best parts was looking at other people's work and what they created. There was some really talented people in the room. People came up with some really lovely paintings.
What is coming up?
Next is a life drawing session for BME women - hopefully this will be in the last week of February. You do not need any experience at so come along!
Why did you decide to go for your role?
I love working with women. I study geography and a lot of my modules are gender focused so I thought it would be an interesting thing to do. I also love getting people together --- especially BME women and women in general so I thought it would be a great thing to do while at University to help others meet new people and for me to meet new people myself!
