Ahmed Jamshaid

Namaste everyone! I’m Ahmed, you may know me as AJ, a second-year Economics and Business student.

UCL Indian Society is one of the most culturally and religiously diverse societies of UCL. Having been made aware of many of the events held this year, notably Desi Boat Party, Dhamaal, and Jashn, I look forward to being a part of the organisers of like-minded events in the next year.

I will be one of the first International Pakistanis to be a part of the Indian Society in UCL. Being from one of the most cultural and historic cities of the sub-continent- Lahore, I aim to contribute to my neighbouring country since we all have the same roots existing to pre-partition.

Since I have been an active part of the Pakistan Society in the last two years, I am aware of running a cultural society. I also have been a key committee member of the Pakistan Society. One of my foremost aims is to integrate the knowledge and type of events from Pakistan to the Indian Society. It includes introducing a new range of events like Gol Gappa socials, debates while having chai, and various field trips. One of my other aims is to introduce Career workshops so that our first-year members don’t forget to apply for spring weeks :) Plus, having Language and Acting classes can be considered. Keeping Existing events line-ups in addition to the new plan proposed could be critical for us to continue providing fun opportunities to our respective members. We together can definitely attain that!

Shirom Aggarwal

Hi everyone, I’m Shirom and I’m a first-year Economics student.

Having been a first-year representative for the society over the last year, I have not only engaged with all the events Indian Society has hosted but have also gained valuable insight into the organisation, planning and hard work behind it all. I have a real passion for the society and would love to be part of the committee to contribute to its success and create maximum value and lasting memories for all its members.

As Treasurer, I will:

  • budget appropriately to continue the success of our flagship events: Dhamaal and Jashn
  • organise and fund more social events at venues such as Simmons Bar, Flight Club and Bounce
  • introduce a stronger cultural focus within the society, hosting Indian games nights, food and music festivals and charity events
  • facilitate new partnerships with restaurants, event organisers and educational sponsors to increase members’ access to discounted tickets and food, and provide careers support

Beyond this, I have the specific experience to effectively manage the finances of the society. This includes: working in excel as part of a J.P.Morgan work experience; networking and hosting talks from the likes of Touker Suleyman, Theo Paphitis and Lord Mervyn King having founded a society at school; and organising a TEDx event where I managed sponsorships and ticket sales of £5,000+.
