Election post
I view Connect.ed as a space where everybody can find ample opportunities to research their areas of interest. Having been a mentee in the Research Mentorship Program, I realised how enlightening it is to research out of inquisitiveness, without the fear of being graded. While I aim to promote this initiative, offering additional opportunity-based incentives would motivate members to engage more. For instance, the society could host a flagship symposium or a review article writing competition. I also plan to set up ‘Research Groups’ that would meet every fortnight/month to discuss recent developments in a particular field over snacks and drinks.
The society currently has a limited reach as its events get overshadowed by more prominent societies. If elected President, I aim to target three areas for improvement- social media outreach, networking and academic collaboration. A prominent presence on Instagram and Facebook would significantly increase membership. A larger membership would allow us to foster academic collaboration with other universities and discuss the prospect of inter-university panel events and socials. Having served as the first-year rep for the EEE department, events executive for UCL WES and workshops executive for UCL EWB, I am well-acquainted with the challenges that leadership and representation entail. I am confident that my determination can accelerate the progress of this society and make it more active and vibrant.
