I'm standing as General Secretary in order to be involved in work to raise awareness surrounding the issues on homelessness.

Having volunteered in a soup kitchen during sixth form and interacting with the service users, I was able to learn more about the issues involved with homelessness but particularly the stigmas surrounding it. I believe that it's a fundamental right to be able to have a roof over your head and a safe space for you to call home. Since starting my studies at UCL, it has been disheartening to see the number of rough sleepers in and around the London areas just on my walk from the station to the uni. Having joined as a society member last year to take part in their research project, I have been able to better understand the current issues that rough sleepers are facing, educate others and highlight ways for us to make a positive change.

Being part of the committee, I hope to take part in work to not only provide resources to help this community but to also plan events to help educate myself and others as to why this is such an important topic to discuss. As interim general secretary, I've created weekly newsletters to inform members of the societies events and how they can contribute to fundraising and volunteering. I'm currently planning a charity bake sale to raise money for Crisis at Christmas too. I believe this will break down the stigmas and negative connotations surrounding homelessness and using our student voices and platforms can do just that.
