Zainab Shafiq

Hi everyone, I'm Zainab, a 3rd year medic intercalating in Immunology, Infection and Cell Pathology.

MedSoc's Pathology Division is relatively new, established in 2021, and I've been involved with it since its (and my!) first year at UCLMS. The past two years I was Academic Officer, which involved running Journal Clubs/speaker events. Currently I am acting as interim Pathology Chair and would love to be formally officiated in the eyes of the SU (by winning this election!).

I'm very passionate about Pathology; the way this speciality integrates active scientific research with clinical practice, and strives to apply our ever-increasing understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms in health and disease to optimising patient care fascinates me. Across medicine and illness, Pathology underpins treatment and prevention. As Chair this year, I aim to run lots of events/tutorials and increase undergraduate engagement, education and interest in Pathology; there's so much variety and opportunity within the field, and I want to highlight this to medical students.

I am already working with the Royal College of Pathologists to run a Careers in Pathology Webinar series this academic year, and have other events in the works with my brilliant sub-committee, including UCL-specific, inter-university and national collaborations.

I have the experience and drive to make this the year UCL MedSoc Pathology gains traction, and to successfully introduce med students to the wonders of Pathology.
