The Sweaty Betty Foundation is supporting Causeway Education to pilot an ‘active and relatable role model’ project to inspire and encourage girls from low income backgrounds to get active in sport and discover the joy of movement!
This is delivered through workshops in schools for teenage girls. Alongside Causeway Education, you will help to inspire the girls by sharing how physical activity has, or continues to, help you maintain your wellbeing, develop skills and achieve goals. It is likely you are studying for courses and careers that are inspirational to the young girls, so they would also get the chance to hear about this more.
Sessions are structured to make them interactive, culminating in an activity where each girl produces her own mini action-plan or pledge card. This will help girls apply the ideas to their own context, and identify next steps which are relevant to them. For example, one girl might plan to join a team sport to develop communication skills with a view to a future career as a doctor, while another might plan to take up swimming as a way to cope with exam stress.
Why volunteer
Girls from a minority background and low income families have the lowest physical activity rates and lack access to opportunities. Role model volunteers can play a vital role empowering and inspiring girls to give them key skills for life to achieve their full potential.
If you’re passionate about sport and movement - this is an opportunity for role models to give back, share their experiences as well as discovering new skills and knowledge. Over a half a million girls are dropping out of sport and physical activity – with your help, we can change this!
There is no minimum time commitment for this project. We are currently working with schools in London to book in 90 minute workshops. Once you have received training, you will be on our mailing list of school opportunities, where we will get in touch with role models. If a time/date/location suits you, you can put yourself forward for a workshop. The workshop can be co-delivered so you are not doing it alone.
The workshops are pre-designed and split into three categories:
- Physical activity can improve your wellbeing
- Physical activity can develop your skills
- Physical activity can help you achieve goals
The main responsibility of the role model volunteer is to share their journey and inspire the girls under these three categories. The workshop and the activities are already designed so you do not need to create them yourself.
