London Nightline
To provide confidential listening, support and information to students in London throughout the night.
Idea for research
Idea for research
London Nightline is an anonymous listening and information service, operated by students for students. Individuals can speak to a trained volunteer about anything—whether it's something big or small—completely confidentially. There is no judgment or advice on how to live one's life; Nightline simply listen to whatever is on the person's mind. All volunteers are students who have undergone extensive training and understand that university life isn't always smooth sailing.

This research idea aims to explore the perceived impact of London Nightline’s presence on university students, not just those who have used the service, but those who are simply aware that it exists. The research would assess how knowing that an anonymous support service like Nightline is available affects students’ mental well-being, feelings of emotional security, and overall campus experience.

This work could be done through a data driven approach through surveys, or through a more qualitative or mixed methods approach.
Impact of idea
The findings from this research will enable London Nightline to showcase the broader impact of its presence on university campuses, even among students who may not directly use the service. By providing clear evidence of how Nightline fosters a sense of emotional security and well-being simply through its availability, the organization can demonstrate its value to both students and universities alike. This evidence will be instrumental in expanding Nightline’s network to more universities across London, as it will offer compelling, data-driven insights into the importance of having an anonymous, peer-support service on campus. Ultimately, by growing their reach, Nightline will be able to extend crucial mental health support to a larger number of students, ensuring that they feel supported, even if they never have to make a call.
