As WAD Blood volunteers, you will be working directly with the Blood Lead in our Student-Led Project. Our SLP collaborates with the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) to organise events which encourage, educate, and make an effort to diversify the current list of blood donors. In order to organise such large scale events, we often need a group of blood volunteers who are willing to collaborate with us in order to organise logistics, as well as in spreading awareness on the importance of blood and transplant donors.
As volunteers, you will be trained according to NHS guidelines on the handling of sensitive information and confidentiality rules. All training will be provided through various workshops that we will hold throughout the year. Additionally, in order to give our volunteers creative liberties and leadership opportunities, volunteers are more than welcome to approach any of the SLP leaders with potential event ideas. If feasible and practical, they will be allowed to lead such events.
UCL WAD will also host at least one ‘know your blood type’ (KYBT) event in which volunteers will help the NHS Blood and Transplant speak to UCL students on the importance of blood donors, especially those from BAME backgrounds, and recruit new blood donors to the registry.
As a blood volunteer, you might also need to help with outreach to the BAME societies at UCL to host collaborative events to raise awareness on blood donation and subsequently increase the turnout at our KYBT events.
As appreciation for their time and work, ALL VOLUNTEERS will be given a certificate at the end of the academic year. If a volunteer decides to continue their volunteering journey with us for another year, they have the option to be promoted to Blood Ambassador or even Project Lead, depending on the availability of committee positions.
