Impact Initiative
We aim to create an empowered community of refugees & students through collective learning at UCL. Linking UCL students with refugees between the ages of 16-25 years old, our volunteers provide help with English conversation and support them with developmental aspects such as applications for jobs or university.Instagram 
Description

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to teach weekly one-to-one/group English lessons with Afghan refugee women. We are partnering with Hopscotch, a Women's Centre based in Camden.

The volunteering opportunity will be taking place in term 2, where you will be committing one hour weekly, plus some prep time before your sessions.

Come volunteer with us to support the integration and growth of an Afghan refugee woman within our community, while discovering new cultures and expanding your global awareness. Grow and develop key skills, including communication and adaptability skills.

You will be part of a vibrant community of student volunteers and supported through a range of social events. We are 6 project leaders who believe in the power of making a small impact.


We will only be accepting female volunteers, for culture-related reasons. The application deadline is 5th December 2024. 

You need to an enrolled UCL student in order to volunteer with us! 

NOTE : Mandatory DBS check is required

Duties

The volunteers would be expected to : 

  • Weekly one-to-one / group tutoring with female refugees.
  • Preparing discussions topic weekly before sessions based on the participant's English level.
  • Providing a safe and educational environment for participants to learn English.
  • Keeping in touch with the project leaders about the progress of the sessions.
Training
The mandatory training sessions will include :
- Introduce Impact Initiative as a project & have a live Q&A
- Equip volunteers with the necessary skills and resources required to become a tutor
- Provide key information, rules, policies
- Conduct icebreakers and practice scenarios
- We also hope to invite an external guest speaker to assist with training

Time commitment

We are seeking volunteers to take on minimum one session of one hour per week.
