Purpose of the job

To support the Language + Writing Support programme at the Union by assisting non-native English speaking students with their written and spoken English.

Job description
  • To provide appropriate feedback on samples of student’s written and oral work in one to one sessions (advising only on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and general clarity of English used)
  • To deliver workshops and facilitate group discussions for non-native English speaking students, to support their education and help build communities
  • To record accurate information about students using the programme, including attendance
  • To assist in promoting the programme to staff and students across all UCL departments, including via events, articles, social media posts and newsletters
  • To develop useful guides and resources for UCL students on common grammar, spelling and punctuation queries
  • To provide general administrative support for the scheme (such as website updates, social media posts and blog entries)
  • To act professionally and confidentially at all times
  • To complete such other duties within the general framework of the post as may be required

 

Person Specification

 

Essential:

  • Excellent written and spoken English; including spelling, punctuation and pronunciation
  • Experience of teaching, giving presentations and/or tutoring
  • Knowledge of the UCL Academic Manual; including UCL guidance on plagiarism
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative
  • Reliable, punctual and able to multitask in order to meet deadlines.
  • Enthusiasm and positive attitude.
  • Understanding of and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

 

Desirable:

  • Formal English language teaching qualification, such as CELTA, TESOL or TEFL
  • Experience of working with ESL learners
