I hope to make campus more inclusive and welcoming to all members of the BME network by organising activities that will also bridge different cultures and students of different backgrounds, so that BME students could learn from each other. Furthermore, as a student representative, I will make sure that the opinions and voices will be delivered to the Student Union and be enacted upon, in order to usher change from the bottom up, thus making both the university and campus environment more open and friendly to students from all backgrounds.
As the current Treasurer of Drama Society, I have experience working in an executive position where communication and decision-making is essential, especially communication between the society members and student leaders. I've also been in leadership positions in the past, which makes me responsible and highly efficient. Furthermore, as an International Relations student, I have a deep understanding of narratives from various different cultures, which would be great background knowledge as a student leader in the BME network. However, I'm also ready to learn more while in this role.
As a QPOC (Queer Person of Colour) student who have studied in the UK for four years, I've experienced and understood the feeling of the inability to fit in and adapting to a foreign environment, which allows me understanding of the potential difficulties that BME students may experience. Furthermore, I believe my past experiences, along with my communication and leadership skills, makes me suitable for the role and will help me to carry out my responsibilities and role efficiently. I'm eager to represent BME students at UCL as a student leader.
If I am elected, I hope to achieve and ensure transparency and open communication within the team, as well as with the network. I hope to support everyone on the team on matters and decisions, first, relating to the BME Network, but also to create a sense of community that goes beyond this. As Secretary, I will ensure our agendas, meetings and the archiving of proceedings are circulated on time, accurately, and with attention to detail. If given the chance, I genuinely look forward to contributing to the running of the BME Network through this role!
I bring to this role an attention to detail and being a good listener. I have experience in note-taking/minutes for meetings through various internships I have done in the past, which will be useful in my role as Secretary here. Furthermore, like many students, I have experience in managing multiple commitments at once - jobs/internships, university, social life etc., which has made me more aware of planning and time management. These are all values I see as helpful to the role of Secretary, but most of all, I also bring a lot of love for the BME community.
