Idea for research
This research project aims to delve into the efficacy of community engagement strategies in raising awareness about air quality and stimulating active participation in its enhancement. Loop Labs, a community organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for Londoners, has proposed an innovative initiative titled "Walk the Talk." This seeks to leverage technology and community involvement to foster a culture of walking, increase exposure to areas with high air quality, and reduce pollution in urban environments. The research aims to:
(1) Evaluate the effectiveness of community engagement strategies, including gamification elements such as treasure hunts and photo challenges, in promoting awareness of air quality.
(2) Assess the impact of Loop Labs' "Walk the Talk" initiative on increasing physical activity levels and reducing exposure to air pollution among students and their parents.

The proposed methodology comprises three stages, subject to potential adjustments. Firstly, a comprehensive review phase will analyse existing literature and successful initiatives to identify effective strategies for social engagement with air quality. Secondly, in collaboration with Loop Labs, an app development phase will create a user-friendly mobile application integrating gamification elements to encourage walking and raise awareness of air quality. Finally, during the testing and feedback stage, the developed app will be deployed in small focus groups, including students, parents, and community members, to collect qualitative feedback through surveys, interviews, and usability testing, evaluating its effectiveness in fostering community engagement and promoting behaviour change.
Impact of idea
This research has the potential to make a significant impact by addressing urban air quality issues through community engagement strategies. By evaluating Loop Labs' "Walk the Talk" initiative and developing a mobile app with gamification elements, the project aims to increase awareness of air quality and promote active participation in environmental conservation efforts. Through partnerships with social media influencers and focus group testing, this research seeks to empower communities to take tangible steps towards improving air quality and fostering a culture of sustainability.
